I’ve made a small print edition from one of my curbside planting studies, rooted in the sort of practical beauty I hope we keep making room for. A rain garden is never just drainage infrastructure; at its best, it is a civic gesture in miniature.

I found myself pausing this morning to reflect on the layered complexity of our neighborhood. This piece caught my eye—a vibrant, watercolor-style collage of faces, each rendered in deep blues, golds, and fiery reds. It feels like a visual representation of the very thing I strive for in my work as a planner: the idea that a community is not a monolith, but a tapestry woven from countless individual perspectives, histories, and dreams. When I look at these profiles layered one over the other, I am reminded that the public spaces we design are essentially stages for these diverse lives to intersect. It is easy to look at a street corner or a park and see only infrastructure, concrete, and benches. However, the true success of our urban fabric lies in how well we accommodate the people who occupy those spaces. Each person brings a different narrative, and when those narratives overlap, we create something much more resilient and beautiful than any single blueprint could dictate. As I start my day, I am carrying this image with me as a reminder to keep listening. We are all building this city together, one conversation and one shared space at a time. It is a privilege to play a small part in shaping the environment that holds all of these stories. I hope today brings a moment of genuine connection to everyone reading this, regardless of where you find yourself in our shared landscape.
There is a distinct, grounding magic in watching the sun dip below the horizon from the edge of the South Boston waterfront, an urban landscape that I have had the immense privilege of watching evolve, and indeed helped actively shape, over the course of more than two decades. As I paused to capture this quick selfie during my evening stroll, with the camera catching the warm, amber glow of dusk reflecting off the harbor behind my smile, I was struck by a profound sense of gratitude for the shared public spaces that truly anchor our modern coastal communities. Decades ago, this expansive stretch of land was largely characterized by industrial decay and limited public access, but through decades of deliberate, collaborative planning and a shared civic vision of environmental stewardship, it has successfully transformed into a resilient, vibrant public realm where residents from all walks of life can connect with both nature and one another. Standing here at the water's edge, feeling the cool ocean breeze juxtaposed against the lingering warmth of a late May evening, serves as a powerful, living reminder of why I originally dedicated my career to sustainable urban planning; it is ultimately about cultivating these very moments of accessible, everyday peace and ecological harmony. This gentle transition from the high-energy demands of the professional workday to the quiet, contemplative serenity of dusk offers us all a vital opportunity to pause, breathe, and deeply appreciate the intricate, delicate balance that must exist between our built environment and the natural world. It is precisely this sense of connection and accessibility that drives my current focus on the South Boston Greenways Initiative, as we work tirelessly to integrate more sustainable transportation corridors and expanded, resilient green spaces throughout our cherished neighborhood. Ultimately, this peaceful sunset walk was the perfect, restorative conclusion to a productive day, reinforcing my personal commitment to advocating for thoughtful, community-centric design that honors our past while safeguarding a vibrant, equitable, and sustainable future for everyone. 🌅
This exquisite painting, capturing the tranquil descent of a sunset over an urban bridge, truly resonates with my profound appreciation for how our built environments interact with the natural world. The masterful blend of warm, fading light with the cool, reflective waters beneath creates a breathtaking tableau, reminding us of the inherent beauty that can be found within the heart of a city and the power of thoughtful design to evoke such serenity. It is precisely this harmonious interplay between structure and environment that I strive to achieve in my own work, particularly as we envision projects like the South Boston Greenways Initiative. To transform and enhance public spaces so they offer both utility and profound aesthetic pleasure, allowing people to experience their surroundings with a deeper sense of peace and belonging, is a continuous pursuit that this piece beautifully encapsulates.
